Scullers Christmas Update

Women’s Club Quad at Four’s Head of the River 2022

A Busy Start

Tideway Scullers has had a great start to the 22/23 season with a very busy training schedule for athletes of all ages, a return to both the Bernie Thompson and the club wide 30 minute R20 and some impressive head racing results.

The social scene has been active too with the Junior Dinner, Murray’s quiz evening and the Christmas Pudding Social to name but a few.

Scullers athletes have raced in America at the Head of the Charles, World Coastals in Wales with serious representation at all the main head events, including an amazing show of 57 entries at Weybridge Silver Sculls.

Masters athletes raced World Masters in Libourne, Loch Ness and the epic 99 mile Tour du Lac Leman, Switzerland. Our new coaches Ben Lewis (Head Club coach) and Richard Hawkins (Junior Men’s coach) have settled in and welcomed many new athletes of all ages.

Christmas Pudding Races

Recently, an extraordinary couple of weeks of snow and ice culminated in the Christmas Pudding races turning into “all club ergs”. Teams of four battled over a 10 km erg, each team member needing to complete 2.5 km. All groups/ squads at the club took part with some teams spanning an age range of over 50 years, amazing, and no use of the club’s defibrillator was needed! We even saw many of our coaches in action, with some impressive splits - at least at the start of their 500m!

And in other news….

We have run some very successful Tidy Up days at the club, thanks to everyone who helped. This week saw the new roof completed, folowing a delay while a team successfully applied for and gained a grant from Hounslow Council for insulation. Major thanks to Gareth Newton and Chris Williams for extraordinary determination and presistence to achieve this.

We look forward to the rest of the winter being dry and warm…inside at least!

Note - All Group/Squad Cleaning Timetable will be active from January. Details soon.

Finally let me know if you would like to organise a Thursday evening social and if you have any other ideas for supporting the club.

Wishing everyone great winter paddling and a calm festive holiday!
