Autumn Captain Update
Hi Everyone,
It has been a great start to the Rowing year with training happening in typical Autumn conditions; sunny but frosty mornings, occasional torrential downpours and some seriously windy days!
We have welcomed lots of new faces to the club and hope to get to know them all better now that the bar is open and we have some social events on the horizon.
20th November - TSS Quiz, see later
19th February - Annual Club Dinner (more details soon, hopefully with an exciting new venue)
We held a Tidy Up day and Barbecue in September with over 45 attending (Amy and Hamish - thanks for the bbq!) and last weekend ran a mini tidy up with further “gardening” achieved, sheds and arches tidied and litter picked. Thanks to all who came down to help and to Mike and Lasse for organising us.
It is great to be doing things as a club, next plans include making our club room more welcoming and corraling the trestles! We also plan to put up some photos of who does what and try to get to know everyone.
If you have any ideas of how to improve our home please do let me, or any of the committee/ coaches know.
Racing Info and Update
We are approaching the first really busy racing weekend for the club and we have entries from JM, JW, SM, SW, Claire Mc, MM and MW in three heads in two countries. Good luck to everyone racing.
We have two SW eights racing in Basel Head, Switzerland. Competitors from 10 different countries are racing a traditional 6.4 km head race and a 350m sprint.
On Saturday, at Fours Head the Senior crews entries include a composite Op.Champ 4x- featuring George Bourne and Sam Meijer and a composite W.Champ 4x- featuring Katie Wilkinson-Feller, Saskia Budgett and Meg Saunders.
We also have Senior repesentation in the Club categories. The Claire Mac group are represented in two crews, one featuring Tim Male and a W Club 4- featuring our club president Kate Grose. The JW and JM are each fielding several crews with the JM focussing on the 4x- and the JW covering sweep and sculling entries.
On Sunday, Vets Fours takes place with the MM fielding five crews covering age cats D (50-54 years) to H (70-75 years) competing in both sweep and sculling events. The MW are focussing on sculling with an entry in each of D, E, F and G. The Claire Mac entry will be first down the track as crew 1 (I just wonder how many head races that crew totals…now, there’s a quiz question!)
Other squads started racing earlier in the Autumn with the Junior Squads at Scullers Head, Weybridge Silver Sculls and at Kingston Small Boats Head last weekend. Five members of the J13-15 group raced their first ever races at Weybridge Silver Sculls, including a win for one…amazing!
The Master’s groups have raced at Scullers Head, Weybridge Silver Sculls and Kingston Small Boats Head.
The Seniors were well represented at GBR trials last weekend with some great performances, notably from George Bourne, 3rd and Sam Meijer 5th in the M1x and Helen Kirkpatrick/Alice Bloomer, 10th the W2-.
News Update
Many congratulations to Rhona MacCallum who has accepted the role of Discipline Lead for Junior Women's Sculling for the GB Rowing Team. This role will fit around her existing role with the JW.
Fantastic news for Rhona and TSS.
She comments:-
"The consistent success that we have had as a club in junior women's sculling for GB and at National level is because of the support I have had from the club, so it is a recognition of our program and club as much as it is of my coaching - thank you. I think this will complement the work I already do in the program, developing me further as a technical coach.”
